Where can I stay in Cuba?
Generally there are two types of accommodation in Cuba; hotels and casa particulars. Any good guide book will have a list of Hotels in the various regions of Cuba. These are usually organised into three groups; the top end, such as the famous Hotel Nacional and the Havana Libre, mid-range and budget, with information about the facilities that the visitor can expect to find there. There is also an inexhaustive list of websites with this information.
However, the more popular choice of most visitors to Cuba is to stay in a "casa particular" as this offers the chance to stay with Cubans. By law, a casa particular must be registered and as with most things now, it is possible to book online prior to the date of travel. Please remember that it is necessary to show an advance booking for at least one night's accommodation when organising the travel card (or visa) for Cuba. A registered casa particular will be accepted.
Once again, typing " casa particulares in Cuba" into the google search space will bring up an endless list of websites,most complete with pictures of the casas and useful information about location, cost, facilities and languages spoken.Usually there are separate lists for the different regions in Cuba, with Havana, of course, having the most extensive list.
To make your search slightly easier, I will suggest three useful websites;
1) www.casaparticular.info This contains links to several websites with information about available casa particulars and has been recommended by Frommers Guides.
2) www.connect2cuba.com This website offers the chance to book accommodation in a casa particular and receive Spanish lessons in the same house you are staying in. It gives information about prices and location.
3) www.casaparticularcuba.org This is another comprehensive website through which a casa particular can be booked on line. They have named " Casa Sara" as " Casa of the Year". Having personally stayed at "Casa Sara" , I can fully recommend it and say that the title is well- deserved. This casa is centrally-situated on the Malecòn in Havana. Sara, who runs the house with her husband Bernado and her neighbour Denys, is very kind and helpful. She has one room for rent and breakfast is included in the price. See the above website for pictures of the house. This house is Spanish-speaking only. (By the way, if staying here, be sure to challenge Denys, who loves board games, to a game of "Correcto. No es correcto." We invented this name for a board game I took with me from New Zealand and left there. It proved to be alot of fun!)
4) Another casa particular worthy of note can be found on the way to Cayo Coco in the charming little town of Moròn in the Ciego de Avila province in the centre of the island. Although not having any major attractions of its own, Moròn is a very pleasant place to stop for a night or so. The casa in question is Casa Colonial and can be booked by telephone from within Cuba. The telephone number is (Moròn) 503823. It run efficiently by a family, located in the town-centre and has two rooms for rent. The proprietor's names are Sr. Juan Clemente Pèrez and Sra. Bèlgica Silva. Once again this house is Spanish-speaking only.
Please note, if you require an English-speaking house, please check this when making the booking.
Recommendations are coming in for popular casas and the lastest we have received is for Casa Miriam. This is a convenient, centrally located, friendly casa that has been recommended by a regular visitor to Cuba who always stays there. The address is Calle Consulado numero 19 in La Habana Centro. The contact is

The price is 25 CUC per night for a double room with ensuite. Possibly the price will change according to the season. Not much English is spoken but enough to allow communication. Miriam is in touch with about 14 other casas in this community so she can also help organize extra accommodation if more rooms are required. There is a dance school located directly nextdoor to Casa Miriam.
